Thank you @laloalcaraz1 Lalo Alcaraz for your political cartoons! You provide us with a critical lens on the USA from the Latino perspective. Can’t wait for the Pachuco comic book series!

This happened at the Harlingen, Texas airport over the weekend.
The RGV is ground zero for new tactics to remove immigrants and asylum seekers, including unaccompanied minors, through extra-judicial means.

Deep gratitude for the Immigrant Worker Project (IWP) of Canton, Ohio and collaborators: Michele Leiby, Nancy Powers, Robert Gitter, Dosinda Alvite, and Jeff Stewart. Stay tuned for our edited book project which we hope to publish soon! 8/x

This paper advances the concepts of political socialization and cultural citizenship by including the unique experiences of undocumented Latinxs who continue to be subjected to racist rhetoric and discrimination. I hope you’ll read it! 7/x

The 2nd finding relates to cultural citizenship. Alejandra states that, “We’re ‘illegals,’ but we have rights! We don’t do anything bad, we’re simply working.” She (and others) interviewees called for basic rights to legal protections, respect, and dignity. 6/x

The title of the paper comes from an interview in which a Mexican im/migrant states that “Discrimination is rampant. Trump is the head of all this [situation of immigrants].” Alejandra (and others) assigned responsibility to Trump for the discrimination they faced in public. 5/x

Interview data from the 2018 Immigrant Worker Project Survey (IWPS), a community-based advocacy research project, shows how Latina/o immigrants’ critical interpretations of racist elite rhetoric & experiences with discrimination are a form of political socialization. 4/x

I argue that periods of elevated immigration enforcement and high-profile anti-immigrant rhetoric can catalyze expressions of Latinx cultural citizenship in which im/migrants of precarious statuses make rights claims and assert their belonging. 3/x

RQs: 1) how did the anti-Latinx/anti-im/migrant rhetoric of the first Trump Administration shape Latinx im/migrants’ political socialization? 2) How did this political socialization experience contribute to politicized group consciousness and cultural citizenship? 2/x

The administration tried to do this to children in the middle of the night of Labor Day weekend when hopefully few would notice. Thankfully, the plan was paused.

With children already loaded onto planes, a federal judge on Sunday temporarily blocked the Trump administration from deporting dozens of Guatemalan minors and demanded assurances that they would remain in shelters until a more permanent ruling. nyti.ms/4oSpm2q

After all the fancy constitutional arguments & faux historical glosses, this is the practical endpoint of the unitary executive theory. Because when presidential power is effectively unchecked, the only thing preventing it from devolving into authoritarianism is the decency of the officeholder.

One of my dreams is to attend Arthur Ashe 🤞🏼. Not a vodka person but I’ve been curious to make it at home, although I don’t stock Chambord en la casa. I’m thinking a plain, non-herbaceous gin would be my version. I’ll report back if I make it.

Make no mistake about it,
this is, at its root, motivated by an anti-Latino/Spanish sentiment. Adversely affecting other groups too, of course.

The move is an acceleration of President Donald Trump’s executive order declaring English the country’s “official language.”
