Every day is bringing more horrors than the last and it's really starting to just feel RUDE that the dishes and laundry still need to be done.

Wish I could just be like, "sorry, but I have to stare at this wall for a while," and things would magically clean themselves.

Don't trash all your stuff before you drink some water.

Super unfair that our bodies don't just LET US KNOW what the real issue is, huh??
#Autistic and/or #ADHD and really overwhelmed by your home in the last week for some reason?

It's the heat. When your body feels worse, your brain does too. So next time you start feeling hopeless about a messy room, check in with your body before you make a plan to manage your home.

One autistic thing about me is that I struggle to tell my left and right apart.

This is a hilarious problem when I'm helping someone with their home organization and I'm very confidently telling them we should put a shelf on the left when it's actually the right and then we're both confused.

What "rule" of home organization/cleaning/tidying have you stopped following?

My favorite one is "everything needs to be tidy before you go to bed." I tidy better in the morning, and I've stopped fighting against the system that feels natural to me.

What about you?

Home organization becomes even more important when we're staying at home (since it costs $80 just to go outside).

But that doesn't make it easier or more intuitive to actually do when the conventional techniques are the opposite of what your brain needs.

✔️ Neurodivergent?
✔️ Messy home?
✔️ Want it less messy?

Define your tasks more clearly to make it easier.

Cleaning: removing dirt, sanitizing, etc.
Tidying: putting things back in their homes.
Organizing: finding homes for things.

Don't just use "cleaning" for all of them - get specific!

If you’re newly identified as autistic, you don’t need to figure everything out at once.

You’re not behind.

You’ve been surviving without the language, without the mirrors, without the support.

There might be grief.

There might be relief.

There might be rage.

All of it is valid.

It's spring cleaning time - which does NOT have to mean throw-out-all-your-stuff time.

Here's my 7 day anti-decluttering guide to a spring clean! Enjoy your space AND your stuff. And did I mention it's free? Happy spring!

If you've been #decluttering for what feels like years and still don't feel better about your home, that's because decluttering is actually only like 5% of the process and you need the other 95% to start liking things more.

Instead, try this:

Tired of hearing about how the only way to feel organized is to throw away everything you own, because you can't have clutter if you don't have any stuff? Check out my anti-decluttering guide instead!

You can have an organized home AND your stuff.

When you’re #autistic and/or #ADHD, an 80-item to do list looks great, but it feels terrible.

It’s not how our brains work – seriously, 80 demands? All in one day??

Try keeping a separate daily list with only 3 items and see how much easier it is to complete them!

Before: “I’m broken”

After: “I am not alone, there are others like me”

Finding out who you are and what you are is life changing. It’s not a magic wand but it does feel magical.

Do you love going out because you’re a sociable person who enjoys spending time at the bar? Or do you love going out because you can ignore your chaotic home if you don’t have to look at it?

And did you know your ADHD is probably contributing to that 2nd thing (but it doesn’t have to be)?

3.Choose a showpiece. Display a favorite kitchen item so you can see it better and enjoy it more.
4.Choose your sensory experience. Music, naturally! Also: tie your hair back, put on some comfy socks, etc.

AND if you want to clean with others (via zoom), I’ve got a community group forming now!
4 ways to get motivated to clean the kitchen when you have ADHD and don't want to clean:

1.Do something nice for Tomorrow-You. Favorite dishes for breakfast? Wash them tonight!
2.Throw something away. Slimy veggies making you feel guilty? Toss them! And then do a little dance to celebrate.

If you're autistic or ADHD and want to know the first 3 steps I recommend for your home (that don't require a lot of extra energy - I know we're all burned out) here's my free guide:

Feeling too overwhelmed to organize/tidy the inside of your home because everything outside your home is chaotic, unstable, and terrifying is a totally reasonable response.

And, having a tidy, organized home that feels good makes it easier to put energy into other things, too.

Both can be true.

More home organizing professionals need to check that their advice isn't straight-up shame and blame before they post it.

Doom piles aren't because they don't care - it's because there's a critical element missing from their system.

And surprise, surprise - it's not that they're lazy.

One of the easiest ways to accomplish more when you're organizing with ADHD/autism is to reduce expectations.

It sounds counter-intuitive, but when you can do whatever feels good instead of trying to meet a demand, it's easier to get more done. Because, you know. You get to do what you want.

What is the most frustrating #homeorganization advice you've ever been given if you're #autistic or #ADHD?

I think my personal favorite is a close race between "make a to do list (that includes EVERYTHING)" or "be more disciplined about it."

Oh, and neither of those works, by the way.

I promise there's a better way! Organizing, cleaning, and tidying shouldn't feel like being chased by tigers.

If they do, let's fix that!

If you're #autistic or #ADHD and:
- left your stuff all over your bedroom floor as a kid
- have a cluttered desk covered in sticky notes
- put things away in drawers and immediately forget they exist

then consider using clear containers, not labels, when you organize. You need to see your stuff.

ADHD and struggle with organizing? It's not "just messiness," it's a fundamental mismatch between conventional organizing and the ADHD brain.
