Good morning New York 🤎 Such a pleasure to be meeting colleagues equally enthusiastic about regional citizenship regimes and discuss this while walking through Manhattan

It was such a pleasure to visit #UNU-CRIS @ununiversity.bsky.social yesterday, where I presented insights from fieldwork in Ghana’s borderlands on the impact of the AES-ECOWAS split on free movement. I very much look forward to future collaborations and to seeing you all again in beautiful Brugge!

Yesterday was exciting as I got to visit Brussels School of Governance @bsog.be and discuss free movement between The Gambia and Senegal. Now off to UNU-CRIS @ununiversity.bsky.social to present my preliminary work on cross-border mobility and fragmented regionalism #AES #ECOWAS

Pleased to be discussing my preliminary work on ‘security at the margins: governing mobility in #West #African #borderlands’ at @uni-hamburg.de, where I present insights from fieldwork in Ghana to further unpack the security-mobility nexus in zones of legal informality and limited state authority.

From the green city of Gainesville to the windy city of Chicago, my US trip is now sadly coming to an end🐊

It has been truly wonderful to meet such brilliant and inspiring #borderland researchers, #African studies scholars, and #socio-legal experts.

Such a pleasure to listen to Anders Norge Lauridsen defend his PhD thesis and learn about the #Sihanaka of #Madagascar, well beyond my research area. Well done Anders! 💥

In the beginning of April, I had the pleasure of participating in #CERTIZENS workshop 'Changing ID Systems in West Africa' where I discussed preliminary findings on the interplay between free movement law and cross-border mobility at borderscapes along the Tano River dividing Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire

We discussed the same type of challenges that can occur when identification processes transform from oral identification to documentary identification to biometric/digital identification, especially also in military junta and hybrid regime contexts at the recent #CERTIZENS workshop in Accra, Ghana.

Two years ago, I defended my PhD on citizenship in #ECOWAS and #ASEAN. I am thrilled to be back at the School of Global Studies, University of Gothenburg to discuss fieldwork insights from my postdoc project #REMOBILISE on how people navigate free movement law

How do you navigate a border that is also a river? #liquidborders #ECOWAS

Today I spent time with people who cross through and manage the Elubo-Noé border between #Ghana and #Côted'Ivoire. This border site is particularly interesting due to its geographical character very different to e.g. #Aflao

Off to #Accra for fieldwork at the #Elubo border town, followed by a truly exciting workshop on identification and mobility hosted by #CERTIZENS and the #UniversityofGhana ✈️

"People will always move. Right next to the main building you see all the 'beats'. They continue all the way to Burkina Faso and further. Our government knows this and even has agents to help manage them instead of preventing us from moving where we always have moved"

Today's visit at the #ECOWAS joint border post at #Akanu (Ghana) and #Noepe (Togo) revealed fascinating insights on the tension between bilateral border management and regional mobility law, manifesting the - at times - disparity between 'law on paper' and 'law in practice'.

While I am struggling to keep up with all the different actors involved in cross border #mobility such as agents, motors, facilitators, customers, and drivers, it becomes quite a lot easier to navigate the five official #Aflao border checkpoints in both #Ghana and #Togo with these tickets at hand.

Excellent first day at the #Aflao border between #Ghana and #Togo 👊🏼 Filled with interesting discussions on border governance, digitalisation of #mobility (and its complications) and the practices of #ECOWAS free movement law 🛃

It is a privilege to have been visiting the Danish Supreme Court and be introduced to the court system and its structural framework by Supreme Court Judge Mohammad Ahsan. Established in 1661, the Supreme Court has been situated in these remarkable premises at #Christiansborg since 1919.

💥New publication💥I unpack how #ECOWAS officials work on securing access to free movement and investigate the interplay between #gender #mobility #infrastructures in West Africa. Published in the #MOBILE working paper series and soon OA published with the German Law Journal.
