Today is National Suicide Memorial Day for Healthcare workers, an annual event in memory of those lost to suicide – colleagues, friends, and loved ones whose absence is deeply felt. 2,500 have lost their lives in this way in the UK since 2011, an average of four every week.

In both print and online versions of today’s @financialtimes.com, our Chief Executive @theasrstein.bsky.social says the vision behind the 10 Year Health Plan is the right one. The ambition for England’s NHS is clear, but it will be harder to achieve.

NHS plan is long on the ‘what’ and short on the ‘how’
The vision of community healthcare is right but marred by the belief it will save money

The Government's 10-Year Health Plan takes welcome steps to tackle NHS staff mental health, with new standards on safety, flexibility & wellbeing.

We’re pleased to see our input reflected & stand ready to help deliver real change.

Do you think the measures go far enough? #NHS #mentalhealth

The Institute of Naval Medicine—the spiritual home of Royal Navy doctors—has joined our National Memorial Tree Campaign.

At the ceremony, Surg Capt Heames honoured healthcare workers lost to suicide. Want to plant a tree? DM us to join our info session tomorrow. #MentalHealth

To write this @newstatesman.com column, I asked colleagues about their enduring memories of working on Covid wards.

Their messages, sent as voicenotes, had one thing in common: each respondent broke down in tears.

What does that rawness mean for today's NHS? 🧵

NHS staff are still traumatised by the pandemic
Despite their continuing levels of severe distress, funding has now been withdrawn from mental health hubs.

These quotes are a tough read but it's why we are continuing to push for cultural change within the health sector. We have to reach a time when it is going to be OK to admit you are struggling with your mental health.

27% of #doctors feel taking time off for #mentalwellbeing issues is not “acceptable” where they work.

More needs to be done to enable and support healthcare workers to take time off when they are too unwell to work.
