Hanukkah is one chapter in the ancient tension between Athens and Jerusalem—Greek and Jewish civilization. In my regular Hanukkah post I examine this conflict, and of course turn it to vice presidents.

Indiana standing up to Trump on gerrymandering gives me an excuse to write about the Hoosier state. There’s something special about Indiana, and not just because it is a top producer of vice presidents—although really, that should be enough!

Define largest. I think the Brits would like a word. Falklands Armada was pretty big, at least in total numbers of ships.

In the Caribbean, tactics overshadow strategy. This occurs across policy issues for deep-seated, human reasons. At the core of Veepology is the idea that a good VP can help a president overcome this challenge and provide a broader perspective.

For Throwback Thursday I share a piece I wrote a while ago on supply chains, back when we were running out of everything. Supply chains are super interesting and complex—but they are designed for efficiency, not resilience.

If you’ve been interviewing for jobs, or interviewing to hire, PA Governor Josh Shapiro provides a pretty good example of what NOT to do if you really want a job. I don’t think he wanted the job, but still—learn from Josh.

What happens when a traditional politician picks a social media figure with no political experience as his vice president? Keep an eye on Bolivia—because we are going to find out! And it may be a harbinger for the other nations.

The feud between Bolivia’s newly elected President and VP has multiple implications—not the least of which is a lesson relevant to the U.S. on what weak institutions mean for democratic governance.

In today’s Veeply Roundup I take on some of the big questions:

Do we need lieutenant governors?

Why does Honduras have 3 vice presidents?

Did JD Vance send the Secretary of the Army to Ukraine?

For Thanksgiving Throwback Thursday I write about why Aaron Burr (of all people) was our most important VP. We should be thankful for his use of the powers of the vice presidency to protect our democracy. Despite it all, we have much to be thankful for.

The core conceit of Veepology is that looking at Vice Presidents can tell you something about a nation’s politics. That is certainly true in Venezuela, where VP Delcy Rodriguez plays a major role. Timely reading as the U.S. pressures the Bolivarian regime.

Given all the doings around Venezuela, I thought we’d take a look at their vice president, Delcy Rodriguez. Compared to most VPs she exercises a great deal of power—there are institutional reasons for this unique vice presidency.

The most recent Down the Hall is a medley. We say happy birthday to President Garfield and look at Trump’s plans for another DC landmark. But most importantly, while discussing the VP’s comments on his family’s religion, I learned something from my wife.

Yesterday, for Veterans Day, I looked at vice presidential service in the military. Future presidents were more likely to serve and had higher ranks than future VPs. These patterns shed light on U.S. politics and our relationship with our military.

For Veterans Day, I did an analysis of VPs who were veterans. Prior to Vance, there hadn’t been a VP vet this century (we also haven’t had a veteran President since W). The last one was Gore. Vance represents a new generation of veterans entering political office.

Thoughts on Dick Cheney’s role as vice president and his influence in the administration of George W. Bush. Despite rumors, Cheney was no puppet-master, but he consistently enabled unwise decisions. We’re still paying the price.

Down the Hall heads into new territory—studying fictional vice presidents. This post looks at the VPs in Netflix series The Diplomat. Fun show, but it shouldn’t be taken as an accurate depiction of politics, which doesn’t mean it isn’t worth examining.
