With too few Canadians engaged in the reality of today’s politics, and media glossing over Pierre’s plans, Canada needs Rick Mercer back to slap some sense into the national conversation. Be like Jon Stewart and return for the good of the nation!

This is no longer just about Toronto. I urge the rest of the Province to step up and join the fight. This is NOT normal, not democratic, and not a precedent we should be setting in Canada. #LetsUnite #MobilityForAll #FordMustGo #VoteLikeItMatters

The professional industry has been vocally opposed for weeks. Will #Canada or the Association of Ontario Municipalities, Big City Mayors, and MPPs across party lines step up and voice their direct opposition to this anti-democratic bill?

I’ll repeat, this was never about #congestion. It’s a #WarOnBikes, and on any non-auto form of #mobility in Ontario.

It reeks of corruption, abuse of power, and lobbying from the #oil, #gas, & #auto industries.

This is harmful to fight #climatechange, to reduce #emissions and plan for better.

Finally (but maybe not), and perhaps the most regressive sneak in,

- #Bill212 will ban municipalities in #Ontario from installing ANY bike lanes, on any road or street, INCLUDING SIDE STREETS, without provincial approval if a vehicle lane is impacted.

This was never about #congestion.
November 22, 2024 at 5:23 PM
Third, specific to the continued vengeance against #Toronto..

- Approves the removal of the ENTIRE Bloor Street bike lane, not just the end segment in #Etobicoke.

- Directs the Minister of Transportation to remove the Bloor, Yonge, and Avenue Road bike lanes themselves, WITHOUT city action.
November 22, 2024 at 5:23 PM
Second, in response to the latest report from #Toronto on the cost of removal:

- The amended #Bill212 will not require the Province to pay all of the city’s expenses to remove the bike lanes.

- The province won’t reimburse municipalities for the cost of installing these lanes in the first place.
November 22, 2024 at 5:23 PM
First, the obvious shockers from this latest amendment:

- Bill 212 will ban people from taking the Ford Government to court for its decision to forcibly remove cycling infrastructure, including for any individuals who are killed or seriously injured from a collision after protections are removed. 🤯

In fact, congestion will worsen as additional ring highways incentivize additional auto-dependent sprawl forcing people to drive further and further distances.

This is not sustainable, or a solution to the regions problems. What is? Regional rapid transit, infill development, and micro-mobility.
November 21, 2024 at 12:57 AM
There has been enough said to prove that these highways will have severe ecological consequences for the Toronto region, and will not solve congestion. Modelling shows only a 2 minute time savings from end to end. For untold billions of tax dollars.
November 21, 2024 at 12:57 AM
Bill 212 will also exempt highways from the Environmental Assessment process. Yes, this includes the highly controversial Highway 413 through the Greenbelt, and the Bradford Bypass. Because who needs flood protection, clean air, and farmland, right??
November 21, 2024 at 12:57 AM
A reminder that there is more than one issue at stake other than the forceful, non-data-supported, vote-driven removal of downtown bike lanes (important but used as a political distraction… which the media fell for so hard) but…
November 21, 2024 at 12:57 AM
That doesn’t make it any better. I’ve been following Canadian politics for many years and this administration is by far the most blatantly corrupt and it’s a damn shame they were reelected with a majority by a fraction of eligible voters in 2022. People need to wake up and see who’s hurting them.
November 20, 2024 at 3:30 AM
That’s the leader of the Ontario Green Party! While a tiny minority, they have done a great job in holding the governments feet to the fire with alllll of the numerous environmental scandals over the years.
