...for not much more cash upfront - why spend x billion now upgrading something when a new piece of infrastructure cpuld only be 30% more, for a lot more bang for the buck.
This country is poor when it comes to infrastructure - no long term thinking and low capability when we actually do something!

To provide the capacity that is gamechanging there's no point trying to upgrade an existing route, as basically *we* would be back to square one in about 30 years anyway - building HS2 in full to the NW (minimum) would give us capacity for probably the rest of this century.

The main benefit of HS2 is to provide more capacity across the network - specifically for freight. Most containerised freight coming into this country comes via Felixtowe, Southampton and London Gateway, and the proportion of that freight is heading for the north & Scotland. There is no more space!

Unfortunately someone else has fallen into the trap that HS2 was all about a faster commute between Birmingham & London 😒
That was just a side benefit - the real reason is that the west coast AND the east coast lines are both FULL at the southern ends ie if we want national growth we need HS2

And yet at some point in the past they mamaged to get close to something nice - Castle Street, albeit it's a bit barren and needs some landscape softening.

Probably, the Marionville Road ones have been seen in their normal position 😆

Unfortunately it hasn't lasted long, the graffiti is returning.

Supply and storage is mentioned in your article as challenges, but has anyone done the calculations around cost? Probably one of the main reasons that the rail industry has pivoted away from Hydrogen recently.
