The Rockefeller family owned a good-sized chuck of land nearby. Part of it was a working farm and part was a retreat where they fished, went deer hunting and played golf on a private course. About a generation ago, they sold most of it to the Army. The rest is this state park.

Being in the woods as the sun rises is on my list of life's greatest pleasures. I'm so glad that the world still has wild places in the 21st century. I bet you didn't know that the Appalachian Trail can be reached in less than an hour from Manhattan.

I was a farm kid on land my family bought during the depression for a few dollars an acre. The land has been slowly sold starting in the 60s and today, just a small remnant is left.
An old, collapsing wooden shed sits in the middle of an overgrown field. The boards are warped, broken, and faded to a soft gray, with gaps large enough to see through. Vines and bare branches cover the roof, blending the structure into the dense tangle of trees behind it.
