How to adequately fund Amherst’s schools and fix its roads and other aging infrastructure were the two budget concerns most cited by candidates at the outset of Monday night’s Town Council debate hosted by The Amherst Current and the Graduate Student Council of the UMass School of Public Policy. But it was the town’s housing challenges that seemed to loom over the rest of the evening - and they elicited the biggest reaction from the many students in attendance.

Six candidates for Town Council engaged in a debate Friday night sponsored by The Amherst Current. The debate was moderated by Stan Rosenberg and co-sponsored by the Graduate Student Council of the UMass School of Public Policy. The candidates addressed a range of issues, including budgeting, housing, economic development, infrastructure, and the potential for an override of the state law limiting property tax increases. The Amherst Current is presenting two debates featuring candidates for the Town Council shortly before the election on November 4. Construction continues in full swing across Amherst! Here is a photographic update on the work underway at Amherst Regional High School to rebuild and reorient the track and field; the ongoing work to build a new elementary school at the site of the current Fort River elementary school; and, the work so far to renovate and expand the Jones Library.

At their October 6 meeting, the Town Council voted to refer to the Planning Board two zoning by-law change petitions that are designed to limit student housing.

The Community Responders for Equity, Safety, and Service, or CRESS, have been active since the fall of 2022, but few people know exactly what they do. Nick Grabbe spoke with CRESS and shares this activity report from the month of September 2025.
