I think its a little odd that you have such a need to draw a line in the stand that you would call someone claiming to have read a book a liar for engaging in casual conversation.
As if you can't pick up on prose, writer's intent, sentence structure, etc.

I'm in a book club.
Half of us read the book physically, half listen to the audiobooks, or even switch between.
Is it not fair to say we've all read the books? Or do we have to distinguish: "Well we've all *engaged* with the book..."
"I read maybe thirty percent of the book and listened 70%..."
