It does seem like a pretty good way to have a lavender marriage in the 19th century. IIRC there's at least one f/f historical romance novel where one of the main characters has a conveniently absent sea captain husband.

Feels like a callback to the Brit chapter with the imagery of the right whales moving like mowers through a field. Not to mention the one insular Tahiti! 🐋

Reminds me of the character in Austen's Mansfield Park who comments on her familiarity with naval officer ranks: "Of Rears and Vices, I saw enough. Now do not be suspecting me of a pun, I entreat."
