The Taliban have made life for Afghan women and girls intolerable. They have erased them from almost all spheres of life and systematically stripped away their rights and dignity. This latest ban is a further attempt to silence the voices of women.

The proposed bill on same-sex partnerships was flawed, but in rejecting it the Hong Kong authorities have shown an alarming disdain for LGBTI rights. This bill would have provided the bare minimum of protection for same-sex couples – but notably, only those who registered their partnership overseas.
