Local man.
Yeah, It's not exactly a check as it is normal societal pressures that every political leader has to deal with, authoritarian or democratically elected.

Turns out a nationalist international is hard to build!

Fittingly the PM of Denmark is also a woman who Trump has said nasty things about the in 2019 when she's told him that Greenland is not up for discussion.

It was announced by Troels Lund Poulsen, the Danish defense minister at the same time that Rasmussen and Motzfeldt were meeting with Vance and Rubio so it certainly feels more like the latter.

I think this is what a lot of Americans don't realize when looking to Europe. Second generation immigrants are just Americans if born in the US while they remain locked out of civic participation in most European countries by dint of their parents' nationality. It's bad for European democracy!

Denmark had some funny medicinal hiccups - they restrict how much OTC paracetamol you can get to just ten pills each visit to the store and they just had a minor panic about nasal spray and nearly restricted it to pharmacies. There is a sense here that less medicine is better.

Folks feel very defensive of JJ on here. To be fair, I think the NFL feed has a lot of very anti-JJ voices in it so I guess it makes sense.

Good candidates make for good candidates.

Feels like lots of guys struggling on this real turf today.

Hard to say they dumped a guy who wasn't signed for more than a year.

That's a strange take.

Can't underestimate how much winning the pop vote went towards major institutions viewing him as legitimate and therefore deserving of some level of deference. Even though he's been underwater in polling for months, they're still slow to respond to the unpopularity. Hope this is coming around.

Feels like this is always lost in the conversation. It's not like rural America is 100% maga republicans. Most places are 60/40 or there about. Making that 55/45 goes a long ways towards actually wielding enough power to make America more small-d democratic.

You were referring to it as a political symbol, as was I.
September 20, 2025 at 8:01 AM
I'm well aware, which is why I said politically. Probably should have put politically in Germany but I only had so many characters to make my point!
September 20, 2025 at 7:24 AM
Yes, it would be bad. The Swastika was used exclusively as a political symbol by the Nazis. There would be no value in trying to "take back" a symbol that didn't have salience before the Nazis. Obviously different than a flag that has represented a country in slight variations for nearly 250 years.
September 20, 2025 at 5:36 AM
Nazi Germany created their own flag. We're talking about a flag that has represented the country in various iterations since its founding. That feels like a pretty substantial difference.

Oh come on. You can call out European restrictions on free speech without pretending that they are somehow more arbitrary and illiberal than the Trump administration's application of speech rules.

I may disagree with many of the restrictions but they come from a coherent ideology!

I love how it's a horror flick that manages to make you completely forget that about it during the first half. It's like the first hour+ is a period drama, and a good one at that!

Someday they may take me physically away from this place. They may enshrine lies into the law. They may even shed my life's blood. But I will always be an American.

This guy's gunna flip when he hears about the Nixon Kennedy debate!

I was thinking the same earlier today. How is it that I know the top three candidates in a mayoral primary for a city Ive never lived in, will never live in and have no desire to live in?

One thing I've learned since moving abroad is how bad US foreign reporting can be even at some of the major news orgs with dedicated foreign correspondents. Lots of effort in translation seemingly outsourced to translation apps and it's easier to just report as if other states don't have agency.
