The "Putting water on the fire" part isn't the hard part of the work. It's the "Crawling through the smoke in the dark to get you and your kids and pets out of the lethal zone WHILE someone is putting water on the fire" part that's the tricky bit.

Thus my into "This is complicated".
But it's not enough to just say "I've worn a mask in the heat". Try doing something physically intense for a long period of time while wearing an unpressurized respirator. It's incredibly difficult.
Maybe the real answer is to just let the wildlands burn. 😉

To get a sense for this difference, find a steep hill on a hot summer day. Load a backpack with 50lb of stuff, take a shovel, walk up the hill, then back down over and over.
Then try the same thing with a respirator on.
