As the Dutch say, “de slingers moet je zelfs ophangen” (you have to put up the party decor yourself, as in: it’s up to you to make something out of it). So to combat demotivation and tiredness and the early morning, I’ve packed a book, tea, and snacks. Amsterdam, here we come!
The protesting academics’ survival kit: a thermos full of tea, a sandwich, chocolate and pepernoten, a red square to symbolise that higher education is squarely in the red, a sci fi book (in this case, Artemis by Andy Weir).

And lest anyone think it is just people from the university concerned about this: HBO (applied sciences), high school students, unions, children, even a dog withstanding the whistle concert were all showing up.
Geen hoger onderwijs is geen innovatie - no higher education means no innovation, a sign with the logo of the Zuyd university of applied sciences is balanced on a protester's foot.

I also want to share these two pictures of a student I met at the protests in The Hague at the Malieveld. The government is not only planning to cut the budget, but also sharply decrease the number of international students, befitting their general nationalist agenda.
