The cheapest way to own copies of 5 of my maps!

Also, these are both excellent and well-written books.

I don't want an obsequious chatbot, I just want:
a) to be able to attach comments to endnotes/footnotes
b) to be able to convert PDFs with endnotes/footnotes to a Word doc

I just couldn't stop thinking about how weird sperm whale mouths are and yet how perfectly shaped for inserting giant squid into
A scanned pencil sketch of a faceoff between a giant squid and a sperm whale. The squid looks cute and alarmed and its mantle is labeled TAB A. The whale looks cute and happy and its mouth is labeled SLOT A. Tab A does look like it would fit perfectly in slot A. The squid says "I strongly disagree with this diagram" and the whale responds "You can't disagree with evolution."

Why are medieval maps so full of All The Things? There's hardly space to swing a dead eel in there!

In my monthly post on historical maps for paying subscribers, I take a look at that question, and talk about changing ideas of maps' purposes. With fun footnotes!

Jane Goodall was my childhood hero and one of adult me's biggest inspirations. The world is a little dimmer today. May her legacy continue to inspire humans to see other animals with the dignity and respect they deserve. RIP

OMG! Mychal did it. Anyone who first caught this wonderful human gaining an audience on TikTok knew there was something special happening. What an incredible journey and story. Promoting reading and libraries is so damn important right now, and I can't think of a better ambassador.

For me it’s not fall until the wood aster blooms into a carpet of tiny flowers through the nearby woods. Happy fall, everyone!

Another reason to lose “plant blindness,” the inability to tell plants apart: you see drama everywhere. On the train to NYC this morning for climate week I watched poke berry and Japanese knotweed duke it out for space and dominance. Fascinating to see where each has gained ground (#teampokeberry)
