this is 100% not just you, BUT I do think joining communities helps a lot, I met a lot of my really good friends through playing the Pokemon TCG and my fiance found a lot of hers through joining a Spin Studio. Just having something common to connect over is huge when starting conversations and stuff

I think I prefer it if they don't say anything they like flinch and stuff. I can't remember what game but when we were kids my cousin and I were dying laughing turning an NPC completely red and they just slowly turn their head to look at you with no expression followed by "Hey! how's it going?"
