A new and exciting @nature.com Communications study reveals baleen whales operate the planet's largest nutrient transport system, moving tons of nitrogen and carbon from polar feeding grounds to tropical breeding areas. Great job @jjkiszka.bsky.social and coauthors ✨

If they think we’ll stop fighting for our oceans, for our whales, for our planet, they’re wrong. The years ahead won’t be easy, but giving up isn’t an option.

We keep pushing forward. We keep fighting. Always.

People join NOAA because they believe in science, service, and stewardship. None of us do science for money or recognition. And we won’t stand by while this new administration tries to tear down the very foundations of science and conservation.

Today, hundreds of NOAA employees lost their jobs. It’s heartbreaking. It feels like a gut punch to my American friends who didn’t choose this, to those of us relying on federal grants to protect our oceans, and to every researcher now caught in this mess through no fault of their own.

New research reveals the extraordinary energy demands of humpback whale mothers, who travel over 3,000 miles without food to birth and nourish their 2,600-pound calves, a feat now further imperiled by climate change and marine heatwaves disrupting their critical food supply.

You're right! There is so much variation at the individual level, it's so important in ecology/biology/toxicology these days. We can't just rely on population averages anymore :)

Funny enough this morning, I found his biopsy. Crazy to think he’s out there minding his own business, while we’re trying to figure out everything we can about his health!

Still thinking about this big boi, A61, visiting Howe Sound last week. Him and the A42s were far out but it was still magical to see them swing by.

Did you know killer whale poo is green? @anaisremili.bsky.social has been working with some precious samples for a metabolomics project. She told us the shades vary from green-brownish to bright green.

Ever wondered how scientists identify sperm whales? Traditionally, it’s all about capturing photos of their tail flukes when they dive. But what if the whales don’t dive? Enter drones: a game-changer in marine mammal research.
