Dozens of tiny white fox figurines are placed in and around a series of tiny, moss-covered stone houses. Plants grow around and among them, giving the impression some of the foxes are hiding in the undergrowth. Two dark stone foxes, in contrast to all the white ceramic ones, are guarding the entrance to one of the stone houses and wearing knitted red bibs. Sasuke Inari Shrine, Kamakura, Japan.

Ooo, it's #ArtAdventCalendar time and I have a new trip to share with y'all!
Tiny Jizo statues made of white stone or ceramic set on the lower edge of a much larger Buddhist stone sculpture. The statues are mostly bare with caps made of tiny curled nutshells that have begun to grow moss, but a few of them including the central figure have tiny knit red caps and shawls/bibs as is more traditional. It has recently begun to rain, so the dark stone they are standing on has streaks of water. Kannon-ji Temple, Ofuna, Japan.

I'll properly go through my pictures from vacation soon, but in the meantime here's a wave crashing at the ‘Pillow shaped lava field’ on the Tashiro coast of Yakushima. It reminded me of the Toho logo clip at the beginning of Godzilla movies.
A nice wave crashing against some igneous coastline, apparently from an underwater volcano nearby.

Got to visit some of my favorite little guys today!
A little figurine of a human with bug-like eyes. I think it is from the Jomon period, about 1000-400BC or so. Carved stone called "Warrior" (note the sword hanging from the belt). There was an iron sword displayed next to this figure, so it was probably from the Iron Age but I didn't get a picture of the info card. A haniwa tomb sculpture of a smiling man, around the 6th century CE. These sculptures are hollow and can depict humans, animals, and objects. Another haniwa tomb sculpture. This one is called "Seated Priestess", which is a pretty accurate description.

Traditional Japanese village house with a thatched roof, behind some brilliant red bushes Super overgrown thatched roof (seriously it's got a few young trees growing out of it), while in the foreground a young woman with a blue kimono, gold obi, and red umbrella turns demurely away from the camera. It is raining. There are a few bright red maple trees in the distance. Long shot of a canal in the rain with autumn trees and thatched houses. If it weren't cloudy, you could see Mt Fuji from here. A mossy tree trunk. There are black shelf fungi growing out of it near the bottom of the picture, and on the upper shelf is a cone snail. Above the snail, a little brown mushroom cap and a stalk is also growing. There are at least three different kinds of moss.

The rain had a cool effect on this carving.
Stone carved with six childlike Buddhist figures, each with a colorful bib. There are fresh flowers at their feet. The same stone carving after a brief downpour, giving a different texture to the figures.
