🚨 The EU has just classified fossil-based #hydrogen projects using #CCS as ‘low-carbon’.

However, the chosen definition is based on estimated #methane emission values that are too low, which will lock Europe into continued fossil fuel use.

Anastasia Tsougka of ECOS said: "This definition of 'low-carbon' hydrogen is based on unrealistically low methane emission values that don't reflect the reality on the ground. By giving it an advantage, the European Commission has created an uneven playing field for renewable hydrogen - the only kind with near-zero emissions. Low-carbon cannot deliver what no-carbon can, and it shouldn't get a free pass to pollute. This will only lock Europe into fossil fuel use and jeopardise climate goals."
