NC’s largest caterpillar, the Hickory Horned Devil (Citheronia regalis, 15cm long)! Finding one at this maturity is rare due to birds, parasites, and disease. It will burrow under ground and emerge as a Regal Moth next year! #CitheroniaRegalis #bugsky

A pale green Hickory Horned Devil caterpillar on top of leaf debris. It is approximately 6 inches long! Each end is golden in color. One end has horn like structures. I sure hope you get the rain. I have family there and hear about it. I can’t believe how dry it has been. Plus the hurricane a few years back dropped so many evergreens down. It’s like a tinder box. 😢

As the leaves do their autumn turning, Janet (and the rest of the porch roof regulars) starts packing on her winter "insulation." It's always quite a sight to see how quickly they fill out, but during Maine winters the extra padding serves them well...
