The main conclusion is that the data‑centre industry is designing compensatory projects in Chile and Mexico that are not delivering benefits. The forest in Quilicura has been abandoned, and the communities in Queretaro have not seen any of the 21 initiatives proposed being executed.

This paper analyzes two compensatory projects: the Quilicura Urban Forest by Google and Planning for a Better Quality of Life in Data‑Centre Communities by Microsoft and UN Habitat. To do this, we propose examining these projects from a patchwork, locally‑focused perspective.

‼️New article out "Thirsty Forests and Expansive Droughts: The Environmental Impacts of Data Centers in Latin America" where we investigate the feral effects of cloud industry's compensatory projects to mitigate environmental impacts.

After my FOI request to UKRI and its sparked debate on bsky, I followup and UKRI acknowledged errors in the original data and confirmed the correct 2025 success‑rate percentages*:

-AHRC RM: 5.16 %
- ESRC NIG: 10.24%
- ESRC RGR: 6.74%.

*These may rise as 2025 proposals could be evaluated in 2026.

🌱 Oxford introduces water restrictions while becoming an AI Growth Zone. DCs scaling up to 500MW which could use millions of liters of water. While we welcome measures in drought scenarios, we need better urban and environmental policies for balancing digital infrastructure with planetary health.

The @houseoflords.parliament.uk organised a reception to discuss new report on "Big Tech’s Climate Performance and Policy Implications for the UK" by @mctd.bsky.social.

We discussed how AI is driving up carbon emissions, so we need more policy-makers&scholars working on this topic!

One of the privileges of academia is learning from and building upon the work of those you truly admire. It's been an intense week engaging with researchers like Julia Velkova, Patrick Brodie, and Nicole Starosielski who have dedicated years to studying data centers and subsea cables.
