NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter just snapped its 100,000th HiRISE image after nearly 20 years at the Red Planet, revealing mesas and dunes in Syrtis Major. These ultra-detailed views help scientists track shifting sands and pick future human landing sites on Mars.

Astronomers using JWST found a wild exoplanet, PSR J2322-2650b, orbiting a pulsar with an atmosphere of helium and molecular carbon. About Jupiter’s mass and squeezed into a “lemon” shape, it may even have carbon clouds and diamond rain.

On this day in space history, Dec. 8, 1990, NASA’s Galileo spacecraft swung past Earth to steal a bit of our planet’s gravity on its long journey to Jupiter. That slingshot helped send the first long‑term Jupiter orbiter toward eight years of discoveries in the giant planet’s system.

As the sun sets behind Chile’s Andes, it creates a green flash, an emerald spark caused by Earth’s atmosphere splitting sunlight, with green light briefly appearing at the top. Cameras capture this elusive 1-2 second phenomenon best under clear skies with a sharp horizon. 🌅✨

The Geminid meteor is coming soon! Meteor shower peaks late Dec 13 to early Dec 14 under dark skies, with 120–150 meteors/hour. Bright “Gems" appear near Castor in Gemini and Jupiter this year. 🌠✨

🚨 China faces a temporary emergency launch gap after its space station “lifeboat” crisis. Both backup crew return spacecraft are now docked, leaving no quick way to rescue astronauts if needed. This vulnerability highlights the high-stakes balancing act of orbital operations.

New study suggests Voyager 2 may have caught Uranus on a “bad weather day” in 1986. The probe’s “off the charts” radiation readings were likely boosted by a powerful solar storm, meaning we’ve been overestimating how extreme Uranus’ radiation belts really are. 🌌🛰️

Most of the universe's "normal” matter isn’t in stars, planets, or galaxies but in vast, thin gas between galaxies, within the cosmic web. Scientists used X-rays, radio waves, and simulations to find this missing matter in intergalactic space. 🌌

🚨 Astronomers are warning that the plan to have launched around 560,000 satellites by the 2030s could contaminate almost every image taken by future space telescopes, making it harder to spot dangerous asteroids and study the universe..
