Not something I’ve seen in the garden here before. I think he’s after berries.

The tree is being “planted” in the river beside the village green. Christmas approachetheth. 🤣

She’s come a long way from the unloved radio she had become. I was particularly pleased to be able to restore the finish of the gorgeous veneer rather than strip and re-stain.

The Braun RC61B project is finally done!

As a Brit I was taught that if an apology was offered the two parties shook hands and moved on. The BBC (who did royally screw up) has now learned that appeasing the playground bully is a mistake.

The sort of chemistry we can all sink our teeth into. 🤤 But next up is a month of “feeding” with armagnac and, of course, layers of marzipan and icing to top it off. And I wonder why I gain the kilos at Christmas. 😈🤣

Now I wait to see what chemistry can do at 150℃ for three and a half hours. 🤞

Who’d have guessed that the Braun RC61B cabinet would transform like this! Soap and water followed by a single wipe of Howard’s Restor-a-Finish and then half a dozen coats of lacquer followed by a final coat of carnauba wax. From a time when valve radios were also items of furniture. 😍

Time to hatten the batches? 😂

This screen grab of Ship 38 does show significant damage including, seemingly, burn through into the LOX tank. I guess only SpaceX will know how much, if any, of that damage was in areas where tiles were not deliberately left off. The first Ship catch will provide them with a huge amount of data. 🤞

Sorry, couldn't resist it. 🤣

In some ways the bigger challenge remains with the cabinet being all scratched up and with a torn speaker grill cloth for good measure.

Earlier I added a reed switch to the Phono piano key lever arm and a couple of neodymium magnets, polarity to get the field lines nice and tight. Totally reversible, invisible from above and no holes drilled. Now I have a switched (ground) power supply for a Bluetooth board. Cable ties added later.

She’s finally got her face back on. These dial glasses are irreplaceable and so define the era. 😍

Of course all the theory in the world is useless unless the radio actually works. Quite a change fro a month ago when it was difficult to tell if it was actually receiving anything at all. 🥰

IF alignment of the Braun RC61B today. A useful gain on AM (broadcast) and a very useful gain on FM (the blips are artificial markers at ±75kHz). The latter was fun (!) as usual with seven different coils to tweak, all affecting each other. Patience has its virtues though. #VintageRadio

The proof of the pudding. Crumbs, with references to stuffing and pudding it’ll be Christmas before we know it. 🎅🎄😈 #VintageRadio

Giving an old dual 50uF filter cap another fifty years. The original (messy) innards have to be removed, the can cleaned and then it’s reassembly time with modern capacitors.

The FM block, my least favourite place to open up in a radio but with a carbon comp resistor in the Braun RC61B reading over twice its rated value there was no choice. Thankfully the oscillerator (🤣) is still on frequency. 😥

She's done! 😅

Sneak peek. Beauty shots tomorrow.

The Ferguson 383A “Fleur-de-Lis” restoration is drawing to a close. A lot (!) of components needed replacing and the combined volume/tone control pot and on/off switch had to be completely rebuilt but she’s quite a strong performer now. 🥰

Woodworm? Wot woodworm? 🤣

Still a long way to go with staining etc. but the new veneer certainly helps and bits are no longer falling off! Heck, it might even be worth tackling the electronics now. 😱 The Ferguson Fleur-de-Lys isn’t really worth the cost but it’s proving to be a good learning tool.

I’m left wishing that Ekco had spent an extra few bob on the A320’s speaker(s) - it sounds great through the shop B&W speaker. No short wave, no magic eye and a rather basic tone control as well. A shame but it speaks to the British mindset of the time I think. 😢 #VintageRadio

The Saba Meersburg Automatic-9 is done. Quite a journey with this one but very very satisfying to resurrect a 66 year old beauty. She sounds as good as she looks. 🥰 #VintageRadio
