I prefer substitute teaching at high schools that have a strict no-phone policy. The ones that make the students put their phones in a numbered pocket hanging on the wall have more attentive, more inquisitive, and better-behaved students.

Being a person of a certain time or place doesn't hold much water for me simply because of the sheer number of writers (and musicians/artists/etc.) who are also of the same time or place who managed to create wonderful things without any of that coming out in their work. My $0.02.
