I finally wrote up my advice to PhD applicants in FAQ format. It's only my unofficial, personal perspective for folks interested in working with me at Harvard @harvardeducation.bsky.social. I also plug other measurement programs at @ncme38.bsky.social! andrewho.scholars.harvard.edu/sites/g/file...

First, a default screen ban is extreme, but what about default policies and apps for in-class screen management?

Second, can we shift default expectations about the minimum percent of active learning (50%?) that occurs in large, traditionally "lecture" classrooms?
andrewdeanho.bsky.social
Should @harvard.edu shift norms on screen management and active learning in its large classrooms? Two interesting policy ideas emerged from a standing-room-only HILT plenary panel at @harvardeducation.bsky.social on Friday with Jal Mehta, Todd Rogers, Dave Deming, and Karen Thornber...

[email protected]'s reappointment is earned and timely. NAEP isn't just data, it's like bedrock connecting states, a foundation supporting our shared pursuit of educational progress. Scott continuing in the "Testing & Measurement Expert" role keeps NAEP steady amid turbulent political winds.

I'm honored to hear it, Ed! Those gifs are pretty great, made by the HGSE media team years ago. I can share other slides if it would be useful.

Mid-COVID, I wrote my "Three Metrics" memo, encouraging states to use better metrics lest they mislead the public and themselves about educational progress. It's now published in TCR with a bit of "I told you so" context.
Let's keep improving aggregate reporting.

The Yardley meetup is also the first opportunity to get the yellow and/or blue NCME normal curve plushies :-) See our plushie policy here: lnkd.in/p/eGvhR8di

I hear your frustration. I have condemned and fought the firings, as you would see in my history. And I think it's important to have more experts staffing critical federal functions, joining the experts supporting NAEP that I know are there now. I believe even more is needed, desperately.

Glad to see Senate discussing K-12 education live on the hill. My colleague Marty West is testifying. www.help.senate.gov/hearings/the... @harvardeducation.bsky.social

It's great to see NAEP & NCES staffing up. Measurement requires rare expertise. I hope my qualified colleagues consider these important positions and the commitment to public service that they represent.
Note: Some applications are due today.

NCME submissions are due today for our annual meeting in LA, 4/8-11. The flurry of emails I've fielded (and sent) over the past few weeks has me very excited for the scholarship and symposia to come!

Now, I bravely enter the submission portal... @ncme38.bsky.social

Hm, I don't see it that way (though I appreciate the compliment!). The lesson they take isn't "8% is negligible, so I'll skip it."
Instead, it's, "8% is a launching pad to the 12% and the 80%. I can't just go to class and feel inspired. I have to follow through with the rest of my learning."
andrewdeanho.bsky.social
Definitely the latter. But empirically, if we think of a) time they spend in class with me, b) time they spend in section and interacting with TAs, and c) time they spend working on assignments and discussing with colleagues, 8-12-80 is about right per self-reported data in my course evals.
andrewdeanho.bsky.social
The 8-12-80 Rule, an essay I share with my students this time of year: Only 8% of their learning happens in class, with me. 12% comes from their TAs. 80% comes from their time outside of class, with each other.
If we believe this, how should change how we teach and learn? medium.com/@harvardeduc...

These short courses in AI and Educational Measurement look fantastic. I need to update my syllabus. #LifelongLearning

Love to see good funders funding measurement research. Join webinars today and 9/9 to learn more about $3M from @urbaninstitute.bsky.social. #SUMI funding has already funded good measurement projects: studentupwardmobility.urban.org/current-grants

I look forward to more to come. @ncme38.bsky.social

As the school year begins with AI looming, here again are my notes encouraging us to administer oral exams: bit.ly/andrewhoccl

Oral exams were great even before AI. Now, I think they're essential. Here's where I talk about this in my @ncme38.bsky.social address: www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDQx...

I love this "NCME Regional Meetup" initiative by President Amy Hendrickson to build community and momentum towards AIME-Con and our Annual Meeting in LA.

I'm tempted to make a trip down to Yardley myself. Or maybe host a rival meetup in Boston? ;-) @ncme38.bsky.social
