The UK measure of poverty at least takes housing costs into account by setting the threshold at 60% of median income after housing costs.

Yes no doubt there is some hyperbole there but his central thesis is that the US measure of poverty is so out of date that it conceals how seriously the squeezed middle are struggling- far more than their equivalents in the sixties.

Yes exactly. He says that measuring poverty in this way conceals how bad things have gotten because of ridiculous house prices

The UK’s poverty measure is relative, but the US one is absolute: “The U.S. poverty line is calculated as three times the cost of a minimum food diet in 1963, adjusted for inflation.” His point is that this is absolute nonsense now that housing is a far greater proportion of the cost of living.

Yup - love it. Really shows how internal temperature continues to climb while resting, so you have to be brave and take it out of the oven sooner than you think

Have been cooking the same bit of meat with the same bit of kit tonight. My mistake was taking its guidance on what counts as rare. Should have stopped at 50C like you!
