As I’ve done for the past couple of years, I’ve been keeping track of the books I read, and my goal is 52 for 2026

Book 1: Neuromancer by @greatdismal.bsky.social. It’s been a long time since I’ve read this, and I think it’s one of the books where I’ve been most conscious of the writing style.

No, she’s just dumb as a box of rocks. (But cute)

There are a ton of great-looking books coming in 2026, and I've rounded up the ones that I'm looking forward to the most, including space operas, interstellar art heists, unicorns, dinosaurs, and plenty more.

In case you missed it over the weekend, here are my favorite reads of 2025:

Crummy year, lots of excellent reads to serve as inspiration and distraction:

I've got a new piece up in the January 2026 issue of @clarkesworldmagazine.com! It's the latest installment of my "Destinations" series, which is all about the history of astronomy and how science fiction authors have adapted as we learned more about the solar system.

Book 58 of 2025: Ensorcelled by @eliotpeper.bsky.social. This was a beautiful little fairy tale of a story, and a good read to close out the year with.

Post a perfect album from the 90s that isn't Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, or Alice in Chains.

Not done in time for Christmas, but this was a neat little idea that I picked up from Instagram.

I love that Lego has brought back and reimagined some of these older sets.

Book 57 of 2025: Speculative Whiteness: Science Fiction and the Alt-Right by @jordanscarroll.bsky.social. Intriguing examination of right-wing culture and how science fiction can figure into it, either by design or by willful misinterpretation.

Book 56 of 2025: Fox Trot: Pass the Loot by @billamend.bsky.social. I picked up a stack of these collections this fall, and I’ve been enjoying working my way through them from the beginning. This was a fun one, and I’m always happy to see how well they’ve held up.

Book 55 of 2025: The Greatest Sentence Ever Written by Walter Isaacson. This was an interesting little book: a deep dive into a key sentence of the Declaration of Independence. It’s a neat exercise.
December 24, 2025 at 9:39 PM
Book 54 of 2025: Runes of Engagement by @daveklecha.bsky.social and @tobiasbuckell.bsky.social. Exactly as the title suggests: marines dropped into a fantasy world. It’s light, pilot, and a lot of fun.

I wrote Cosplay: A History, an in-depth overview of where cosplay came from and how it’s evolved to the mainstream thing it is today!

Book 53 of 2025: Vermont Female Farmers by JuanCarlos González. This is a gorgeous photography book that showcases Vermont’s farm women and their stories. The photography is beautiful and it paints a picture of the connection these women have with the land.

That couple of days in LA and Disney with fellow 501st members was seriously amazing. It’s what I love about the group: when you meet fellow members for the first time, it feels like you’ve met a lifelong friend you haven’t seen in years.

Probably Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker. Not the best Star Wars film by a long shot, but I was invited along with a contingent of 501st members and the entire experience was a lot of fun.

Well, that’s this evening sorted.

Book 52 of 2025: Orbital by Samantha Harvey. This was a sublime read: a wonderful meditation on our fragile place in the cosmos.
