There is little as mystical as a Friday night in October. The leaves are in on it, changing clothes till they drop. The bugs die off, the bears get fat, the bars burn neon a little earlier. Permission to unbecome is everywhere. Permission to be anything is everywhere.

Some nights in America I feel so far away from America all I can do is walk around. Tonight there is a kid trying to climb a campus statue and his dad trying to take a picture of him. The statue's too big for the kid, the kid's too squirmy for the camera. They keep trying, though. I keep walking.

I got to see The Great Wave today. THE Great Wave. It’s much smaller than the replicas feel the need to be. It felt even bigger because of it.
