Lulu "To Sir With Love", the theme tune to the marvelous Sidney Poitier film of the same name. A classic of the 1960s London era. You need to see it.

What’s the word where you’re from that, when pronounced exactly as it looks, identifies a tourist immediately?

I mean, who's really pulling the strings?

Our son has a very rare genetic condition called DLG-4 Synaptopathy, and we were able to connect with other parents with children with the same disorder. We started a research foundation and coined an easier name: Shine Syndrome

It has been incredibly demoralizing job hunting as a civil servant.

Well, I did it.

After prominently featuring the US federal agency where I work - one which is shut down currently because our political class cannot fulfill the basic functions of government but was, for decades, an apolitical organization with almost universal support, 1/ 🧵

Very nice. Here's one of the last roses of the season in our garden. This is "Campfire" pecially bred for Canadian conditions.
Cluster of pink and white roses. The yellow one has just opened and will turn pink soon.

Can’t decide what to buy on Prime Day?

Try: absolutely nothing, and then go support indie bookstores instead 📚

How do we explain this? Water molecules attract each other strongly, so they will tend to clump together in spheres (most efficient packing arrangement to minimise surface area). But there's also gravity pulling the sphere down onto the flat surface of the leaf.
Science can explain beautiful things
Close up of a single droplet on the leaf. It's a truncated sphere, flattened in contact with the leaf.

A nice example of surface tension forces in action. Water droplets on a leaf. Yes, it's raining.

But are these notes you can trust? 😂

This would be a great training exercise for students. Check that references in Management Consultancy Reports/ Legal Briefs and the like are actually genuine.

Of course, it shouldn't be necessary. Professional standards should always include checking your references.

NYT: A Campaign to 'Bring Back Bullying'

On social media, some are arguing that bullying deserves a second look. Trolling or not, the push seems to reflect a general turn away from sensitivity.
