OTOH, we’re sometimes too selfishly cool to reveal anything much outside of the work itself, in case we help another to an opportunity we have our own eye on, or upset a relationship we might later benefit from. Hence the often stilted chat at openings etc, when no-one says what they really think.

Useful thoughts to bear in mind always, @sedserio.com. Obv an artistic life can be hard won and not too rewarding, financially, so perhaps artists among themselves err on the side of comradely positivity. I’ve had friendships cool off quickly after I’ve paid real attention to someone else’s work.

Tempting to wonder who in govt listens to the 'masses' outwith of election campaigns...
Except that: the loudest of the 'masses' are currently tacking towards outright racism, and the govt is making policy in response to that... so there is listening, but it's selective.

Perhaps Lab are too weak-minded, individually and overall, to imagine governing a diverse nation without recourse to authoritarianism. To do that, today, you need to be both nimble-minded and able to make strong arguments when needed, and they're just not up to it.

That sounds horribly plausible. Poss some of what you refer to is the result of *behaviours* happening at the level of group instinct, rather than actual conspiritorial thinking. After all, some of the main players are obv not the brightest buttons in the box...

I have one of those! Compared to some of the material you post, the cover artwork is quite... weak? amateurish? esp in the details.

Agree w/JKR about questioning narratives. It’s how I was able to categorise the Harry Potter alt-reality as a load of brain-rotting tripe. Unlike the Biggles alt-reality that got me reading as a kid; in which the absence of cis females is a coded indicator of Biggles’s true identity as a trans man.

Maybe "will of the people" is what Brexit *became* for a particular constituency… but before and after the vote there has been no shortage of calling it out as fantasy liberationism. Not so much in the msm, obv.
