If I still lived in Philly I would be thrilled about the Oscars Youtube switch (because ABC in Philly requires an expensive powered antenna, and is basically impossible to get where we put our TV (in the center of a big brick townhome)) and so I pirated it every year

In Chicago, I am more neutral

Never having listened to Geese before, the album started rocky but I'm quite into it by the end!

A heuristic that I realized I’ve started to build is I will trust posts that are either grand theories of everything with little-to-no citations, or very narrow and with a billion citations, but posts that purport a broad theory of everything that also have a billion citations trigger spidey-sense 😒

(Part of the problem by quote posting lol but) I appreciated this as well when it came up in the Ezra episode of Search Engine: it does not have to be your goal to do a thing!
i am commenting on discourse about going back on X to influence people, i am not telling you that you must do video or that influencing people is a goal you ought to have. please learn the distinction between an "is" and an "ought."

What Was That is Lorde's attempt at a Front Bottoms song and no I will not be explaining this further

We finished our full rewatch from start to finish (including the movie and, for me for the first time, the books) of Veronica Mars (which was Som-Mai’s first time) and I’m counting as a success the fact that Som-Mai was invested enough to be so angry at the S4 finale

I continue to be the only person who does it correctly and posts my best of the year lists on December 31st, but it's very important everyone else continues to do it wrong so I can read their lists and see what stuff I missed while I still have time to catch up

I got JHS’ Klon clone pedal on Black Friday and it just arrived and I’ve never played a Klon before and literally immediately on plugging it in “oh that’s exactly the sound of Matthew Caws from Nada Surf live”

Very fascinating part of the Decoder with the Square head of product, where Nilay is saying in so many words "Isn't the fact that the industry is shifting to using LLMs as the natural language parser for deterministic computers a big acknowledgement that LLMs on their own can't do what we hoped?"

I have updated my music-tracking website to include stats on my annual Spotify Top 100 songs, going back to 2016(!! a decade!!) Here's the 2025 list music-tracking.andrewwhipple.com/top-100/2025 and, more interesting IMO, the stats: music-tracking.andrewwhipple.com/top-100-stats/

Unsurprisingly if you ever read any of it, in my brief college playwriting era, there was probably no one who was more of an inspiration than Tom Stoppard!

This is year 4 of Childsgiving (making a Julia Child recipe instead of turkey for Thanksgiving) and once again, as with every year, she is my simultaneous favorite chef and biggest nemesis

I’m making cassoulet for the first time tomorrow, and if this works a turkey cassoulet may become my default “fine I’ll serve a turkey if I have to” thanksgiving move

Original flavor Christopher Landon/Melissa Barrera/Jenna Ortega Scream 7
If you were a despotic president, what movie would you force Hollywood to make? I want to see Quentin's Star Trek movie or maybe Kill Bill Vol 3.

There is officially Too Much TV, this revelation brought to you by the fact that there was evidently a tv show based on (good comic) Paper Girls and it came out *in 2022*???????

Perhaps this is just being different ages and I'll get there eventually, or just fundamental difference in values, but oh my god does the future Ben Thompson imagines in this sound bleak stratechery.com/2025/robotax...
Robotaxis and Suburbia
Robotaxis are poised to further close the delta between suburbs and the city; the city (and Uber) might never recover.

Tangentially similar vibe with AI coding sales tactics: if it's really going to get soooo much better and more powerful, isn't one of the definitions of "better" that it gets *significantly easier to use*? If so how is someone who starts using the tool later in any way "falling behind"?
In the past few weeks I have heard fancy enterprise AI consultants say big companies need to “get their data ready” for AI and been told that legacy smart home platforms aren’t built for AI assistants and my friends, this is the entire problem AI is supposed to solve
