anecdotal, but pivoting away from allowing personal-reflection type stuff for first-year or introductory courses cut down on this kind of stuff a lot. I get the motivation for such prompts but it leads to "this is how I feel & think" without any requirement to justify oneself to others.

Yea I agree and that's something we discussed: the duty to explain the actions of one's country might seem silly, but is more plausible when you're widely considered an aggressor, and it's fucked to lie about being a citizen of a country yours is threatening to avoid another's demand for reasons

99% of the time they're liberals, ime. Also to be very mildly charitable: depending on where and who, it's not just embarrassment but sometimes people are hostile
