Hello. 👋 I'm Andy, a web developer based in Sheffield, which is in the north of England. I work as a Technical Team Lead at Evoluted. My role involves helping mentor other developers, as well as writing code in PHP and JavaScript. I'm also an accessibility advocate, the web should be for all.
#TechMids I have arrived. I am speaking this afternoon in screen 1 with my talk Ulysses versus The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Monday was World Keratoconus Day, but I'm going to reshare this post because every day is Keratoconus Day for me.
Today is World Keratoconus Day. What is that all about you ask?

Great news! Toast notifications often cause me issues. It's good to see a major site like GitHub recognising the problems they cause and changing things in response.

Your daily remember that there is no such thing as designing for just mobile, tablet and desktop.

The ideal viewport doesn’t exist
Before you settle on basing design decisions on a handful of strict breakpoints, make sure you consider the vast fragmentation of screen sizes and browser viewports.

Should you still learn to code given AI can now write it for you?

'Vibe coding' has just been named as the word of the year by Collins Dictionary. It now seems somewhat well timed that yesterday I wrote a blog post about why learning to code still matters today.

We had a great time in Liverpool and the surrounding area last week. I was definitely due a bit of time off from work.

I can't believe there's just a month to go until the #TechMids conference! I'm really excited to be bringing my 'Ulysses versus The Very Hungry Caterpillar' talk to Birmingham.

I don't think a petition will do it — direct action will [wink wink] — but worth signing to send a message at least petition.parliament.uk/petitions/73...
Petition: Do not introduce Digital ID cards
We demand that the UK Government immediately commits to not introducing a digital ID cards. There are reports that this is being looked at.

The line-up for #TechMids is just getting better and better. Gutted it clashes with @ffconf.org
I'm excited to reveal that I will be speaking at #TechMids in November alongside a great line-up of speakers.

This afternoon, I've seen 'guys', 'lads' and 'boys' all used to address the wider dev community online. This sort of language feels a bit exclussionary in 2025.

Diversity in tech is a great thing, it brings more voices and perspectives to the table. It should be encouraged and celebrated.

Firefox appear to have disabled an important accessibility feature in preference of AI. This is on iOS, on version 142.1. Thankfully for now, there is a way of restoring 'reader mode'.

I really hope @firefox.com reconsider the direction they are taking here.

It's been a fun first day at Sheffield's Lick of Paint festival. I've run my first tour. One more to go tomorrow. It's so exciting seeing this finally happen. I'm really pleased I have been able to be part of it with @streetartsheffield.com being one of the offcial supporters.
Lick of Paint Day 1. The atmosphere is buzzing and the artworks being created are top notch. There's another day of this tomorrow, but it's already clear to see that it is going to leave an incredible legacy.

If you haven't been down to check it out yet, don't miss out on the action!

This is a good list of all the things developers should be thinking about when approaching a new feature request. I really like @davatron5000.bsky.social's closing statement. Beware of the developer that says 'yes' to every request.

The last few days I've needed to work without my contact lenses. I'm wearing them again today.

It always shocks me how zoomed in I have had everything in order to be able to work without the lenses. I'm back at my desk and everything is huge on my screen!

'Fully renovated three-bedroom Edwardian terrace' - I think they meant 'renovAIted'.

This isn't a clever use of AI, it is false advertising.

It’s still a work-in-progress, but is ready to use for JAWS and NVDA which are the two most commonly used screen readers.
