I've never forgotten seeing R.E.M. perform this then-unreleased song on Letterman's show in 1983 (up late on a school night!).

But this post has jogged my memory of seeing Icicle Works on Thicke of the Night not much later. They played "Birds Fly" and possibly "In the Cauldron of Love".

I do forget that it exists until it appears over Monterey Bay for golf tournaments or Laguna Seca Raceway a couple of times a year.

I saw Mazzy Star support The Jesus and Mary Chain at the Stanford Memorial Auditorium that year. It was pretty obvious that Hope and William were a couple as they navigated through fans gathered around the tour bus after the gig.

Very cool but I would have felt conflicted over that format. I began switching over to compact discs around that time.
