Happy National Plover Appreciation Day! 💕
Did You Know?

Mountain Plovers are one of a number of grassland bird species that are strongly associated with prairie dog colonies.

Deforestation is responsible for nearly 75% of dry season rainfall reduction in the Amazon rainforest since 1985, according to a study in Nature Communications. go.nature.com/3I2xPzr ⚒️ 🧪
This is figure 4, which shows the relative contributions of climate change and deforestation to the Amazonian climate.

Peer reviewers are exhausted. It's common to spend *months* inviting reviewers, getting refusals, inviting more, maybe 12 or more, then 2 agree but 1 doesn't complete, so you go again. That's why your paper is in limbo. I'm very sorry, it's awful, but it's also an untenable academic labour issue.

Also top-notch wintering habitat for imperiled #grassland birds like Sparague's Pipit and Baird's Sparrow. #ornithology

Survey stakes are in the ground at the San Rafael Valley, where DHS is preparing to wall off the last best corridor in Arizona for jaguars, ocelots & other species. Not a soul in sight.

Opre also falls into the trap laid by groups opposed to wildlife conservation, defund organizations like USFWS, complain about resulting poor management, convert to private lands.

Did he mention that USFWS budgets are so deeply cut that the 1.1 million acre CMR refuge has 1 biologist on staff?!?!
andyjboyce.bsky.social
Not to mention, there probably are negative effects of no grazing on parts of the CMR, but that is only because bison restoration, which is in the CMR management plan, has been politically blocked by the same ranchers your guests lionize.
andyjboyce.bsky.social
The most desirable elk hunting districts in the state are on the CMR...refuge for 1000s of pronghorn in bad winters...best riparian forest habitat in Montana, hosting Black-billed cuckoos in big numbers...there is too much to list. Your guests are incredibly biased.

In the latest podcast episode featuring filmmaker Tom Opre and associate producer Tony Bynum, we discuss their new documentary 'The Real Yellowstone', a deep dive into conservation conflicts between ranching and rewilding in Montana. Here are some takeaways. 🧵🌍🦤 1/10
A group of five ranch hands on horseback gathered near a wooden fence in a pastoral setting. The riders, wearing traditional cowboy hats and work clothing, are mounted on brown and chestnut horses in what appears to be a working ranch environment. The scene is set against a backdrop of golden, dried grassland with a rustic wooden post-and-rail fence visible in the foreground. The lighting suggests either early morning or late afternoon, creating a warm, atmospheric quality typical of ranch life in rural countryside.

This hands-on management proves more effective than the traditional approach. The Charlie Russell National Wildlife Refuge supports just 10 wildlife species compared to neighbouring ranches practising regenerative grazing, where 60,000 acres can host 60-80 different species. 6/10
