Rugby, F1, playing guitar and choral singing (yes, really). Proud husband, dad and granddad, happily retired and living in Spain.
Totally agree re Trump, but I was commenting on the wider problem of the BBC's obsession with finding balance, even where it doesn't exist. I well remember the climate change issue, where the scientists pretty much all agreed, so the 'balance' was a retired politician with an opinion.

If someone is a proven criminal, it isn't biased to point that out. If balance is necessary, also report on what the law says. If the allegation is as yet unproven, surely the balance is to report what the person says about their actions and leave it to the viewer to decide.

I get why the reason for him going is bad, but if a bad guy is out, doesn't it provide an opportunity to appoint a good guy? I don't really understand the mechanics, but it sort of feels like "the enemy of my enemy" territory.

Totally agree but once it got to that stage, a just war was probably the only ethical option.
November 7, 2025 at 8:34 PM
Normally I'd agree, but not in that case. What do you think the leaders should have done in the face of multiple invasions and the Holocaust?
November 7, 2025 at 8:27 PM
It was the reason, and as the father of someone in the military, I'm not keen on the idea of war. But for me, whatever the causes, WWII was a just war.
November 7, 2025 at 6:48 PM
Tbf, WW1 probably wasn't worth it. WWII was a whole different ball game and, from what I can see (caveat: I wasn't born until 1961 so it's all 2nd hand information) it was the only war that I know of that meets the 'just war' criteria.

I demand to see his Morris dancing accreditation.

I'd rather have integrity, competence and hard work any day, but sadly voters are more interested in soundbites, simplistic solutions and likeability.

Very noticeable that "I" appears only where specifically relevant, but "we", "us" and "our" are at the forefront.

At the national level they appear to be rudderless, fighting among themselves and apparently failing to offer the voters a coherent set of policies that address people's everyday problems. They come across (certainly to my Dem voting family in the US) as seeing themselves as an elite.
November 5, 2025 at 11:59 AM
I agree with your point about creating space for discussion, but it's a bit moot if one of his policies is - to me - an absolute deal breaker.
November 5, 2025 at 11:39 AM
If you're referring to Polanski, I was a fan until I saw his defence policy - withdraw from NATO and rely on a "non-militarised European Security Framework". At a time when Putin is a huge threat and the US has shown itself to be an unreliable partner, he advocates demilitarisation. Nope.

The Labour Party could learn a lot from the failings of the established Democratic Party.
November 5, 2025 at 7:08 AM
She can't, and anyway, without knowing all the facts and law, how can you say that the judge's decision was biased? Just because you don't like it doesn't make it biased or incorrect. And btw I detest SYL and would happily see him stripped of his UK citizenship and deported.

1. Removal of ILR is - despite what Badenoch tried to say - a Tory policy too.
2. Reform say he should resign his seat - how about all the defections TO Reform? Will those MPs and councillors also resign? Yeah, thought not.

Isn't that the essence of the (wholly deluded) American dream? "Someday that could be me". (Only if you inherit $500 million)

I get why she believes it (not the sharpest knife in the drawer) but it never ceases to amaze me that others believe anything specifically because she (or any unqualified person) does.
November 1, 2025 at 9:39 AM
Really looking forward to seeing it.

50 years. FIFTY YEARS? Where has the time gone? And it's still a great track.

Who on earth doesn't know?
October 26, 2025 at 9:21 PM
I hope for the best but expect the worst - Trump will postpone or cancel the midterms on some pretext, or indulge in voter suppression with the same outcome. And tens of millions will still support him until they themselves are affected.

Some breathtaking stupidity here. The US voted for this and has to accept that they have what they apparently wanted. That's democracy. They now have to accept that democracy is dead in the US, because the people they voted in made it clear that things would change.

I'm assuming that this amounts to the "cultural coherence" to which Katie Lam aspires.

The most ardent fans of Brexit and slashing immigration of my acquaintance were 2 Indian sisters who migrated from India to the UK in order to get a better life.
