There was a gorgeous sunset a few minutes ago, when the sky lit up, all too briefly, in blues and pinks...just moments later it was gone.

Tomorrow marks 800 yrs since the canonisation of Lorcán Ua Tuathail (Laurence O’Toole), Patron Saint of #Dublin

A towering C12th figure, his heart was returned to #Ireland after his death in France & is kept in this reliquary at #Christchurch cathedral, where he laid the foundation stone in 1162

As a photographer whose work rarely involves people, I look in awe at the work of Martin Parr…such a brilliant observer of the modern world, in all its beauty and absurdity.

R.I.P to one of the finest to ever hold a camera.

A photograph by Michael Parr called New Brighton, England. From "The Last Resort" (1983-85). The image is set inside a battered seaside shelter, one of those open-fronted cast iron structures often found along British promenades. The shelter is dim compared to the bright light outside, which makes everything inside feel slightly shadowed and claustrophobic. At the center of the composition sits a couple on a bench. They are close together but not interacting; each eating their own portion of chips. The man, with his legs crossed looks to his rightwith a slightly annoyed expression. The lady, in a beautiful coloured dress also looks to her right is wiping the corner of her lips. A flask sits on the bench between them. Separated by a cast iron column to the left of the couple is a child in a stroller, laden with plastic shopping bags hanging from its handles. The child leans forward, reaching for its ice cream cone. A overflowing bin is attached to the column, and rubbish lies all around the ground at the column’s base, including numerous wooden forks given out to punters to consume their chips. Behind the couple, to the right, outside the shelter, is a woman standing and pointing at something outside the frame. A whole novel could be written about this image…

Dating from 1172, when Strongbow & Archbishop O’Toole began its construction, the interior of #Christchurch Cathedral is mainly Victorian, due to renovations carried out in the 1870’s by G.E. Street

The leaning north nave wall is due to a roof collapse in 1852

Somewhere out there in the gloom behind the Baily lighthouse, was a rising lunar eclipse. Unfortunately this was the only light I could see.

I’ve been trying for years to capture a full moon rising behind these towers on Cape Clear.

As I saw the moon rise over the horizon I began to laugh manically, knowing that after all this time it had finally worked out for me…

The full moon rising between two towers on Cape Clear island, off the west coast of Cork. On the left a signal tower built during the Napoleonic wars, on the right the old lighthouse, designed by the great George Halpin, built in 1818 & abandoned in 1854. The full moon is between both, at the height of the top of the towers. The silhouette of a buzzard can be seen flying in front of the moon.

The narrator had walked down from "29 Arbour Hill," (the house on the left of this terrace) where an old plumber named Geraghty" lived, and who was refusing to reimburse a grocer "by the name of Moses Herzog."

An image showing the entire facade of a terrace of two storey red brick houses on Arbour Hill, Stoneybatter, dating from the late 19th century, or very early 20th century. The terrace goes from No. 20, on the right hand side, up to No. 29 on the left. Each house has a bay-window at ground level, and a recessed porch area at the entrance door. All the houses are set back slightly from the footpath, separated with a small boundary wall with metal railings, and piers at the entrance gates to the properties.

A very faint & nearly full moon rising over #Dublin city yesterday evening, in glorious sunshine

I was a child when I last entered the incredible Hintze Hall of the Natural History Museum in #London, with a 25 meter long skeleton of a blue whale suspended overhead.

My sense of wonder was unabated as I returned here after 40 years…

Night lights - full moons can be such a fickle muse, but not last Friday evening when I had the pleasure to witness the Worm Moon rising by the Baily Lighthouse. It’s a sight that will stay with me for a long time to come.

Very inspiring stuff Andy…we share a LOT of common ground it seems. I am currently working on a project, providing images for a book tracing the evolution of the use of polychromatic stone in Irish ecclesiastical architecture from the early 1800s - c.1900. Photography has provided me a new path too.
