FYI, here are some references

Yesterday, I gave a talk to the #ISKOUK Conference, presenting the status quo and challenges of creating Knowledge Organization Systems of Research Fields.

This slide summarises what I learned during these years in trying to use AI to generate them.

It's cool, it's artistic, but bloody hard!

The literature says:

“a contribution is made when a manuscript clearly adds, embellishes, or creates something beyond what is already known” (Ladik & Stewart, 2008)

This is very much in line with what I tacitly learned to be a contribution.

Is there a more recent definition?

When reviewing papers, I often read among the 'contributions' a list of things the authors have done, e.g., conduct a comprehensive user study, an evaluation, an analysis of future development.

This is ridicolous as these are **prerequisites** for a rigorous scientific work, not contributions.

Well deserved!! Congratulations!!

You work is really impactful

Even small errors in automatic generation of a KOS can have a disproportionate effect on its performance. @angelosalatino.bsky.social #ISKOUK 2025 Conference

Machine-readable thesauri are essential. @angelosalatino.bsky.social identifies some major thesauri are only available as PDFs. There are a good number available in RDF. #ISKOUK 2025 conference

At the conference, @angelosalatino.bsky.social reviewed existing KOSs for academic disciplines and discussed how AI can help build them.
He asked: How can we integrate existing KOSs of research fields?
It's an important question for both KO and scientometrics.

New adventure. Visiting UniofEdinburgh to start a UKRI grant by the #Metascience unit: “Tracking Stars and Unicorns”

We'll look at successful and unsuccessful proposals within UKRI to track research trends, assess UK competitiveness, and understand appropriate funding mechanisms to support ECRs

Just received reviews from a journal* paper I submitted, and one review was clearly for another paper.

The Editor in Chief simply can't care to fix things

*Not sure if I must oblige by shaming the journal, but it's an Elsevier one and has an IF of 8 (that must mean sth in terms of reputation)

I feel old when I have a coding issue, and I go to seek a solution on StackOverflow (yes, a bit anachronistic), and then you find a solution from 16 years and 4 months ago. And it works!
