Our findings reveal that higher political trust and pro-Western geopolitical views are positively associated with this willingness. Pro-Russian and ambivalent geopolitical orientations reduce support. Economic hardship also decreases readiness to provide certain types of aid.
The articleexplores the factors influencing Slovaks' willingness to support Ukrainian refugees in various ways (e.g. by donating food, volunteering, etc.) during the first two years of Russian aggression.
Strong partisan effects suggest that the costs to the incumbent party of attacking democracy remain low amongst a good portion of the society, facilitating democratic backsliding in the country.
Moreover, our results show that the factors influencing diffuse support for democracy have remained consistent, while those influencing specific support have shifted.
Despite growing concerns about democratic backsliding in the country, including electoral malpractice, reduction of fundamental freedoms, and attempts to silence civil society, our results show that diffuse and specific support for democracy increased during the 2019 2024 period.
In this paper, we contribute to the literature on public opinion towards democratic backsliding using Georgia as a case study.
