Extremely interesting that Tarantino, who wrote himself a part in his second movie where he got to say the n-word a bunch, made one of the most thoughtful movies in recent memory about the racist/oppressive systems embedded into american culture

Men like Candy will never just admit defeat and give up their power. But there will always be men like King who will never accept evils like slavery. And then you have Django and Broomhilda, who have 0 institutional power but are affected by the choices of the men who do.

Also notable that King shooting Candy doesn't accomplish much. King is killed and Django is put back into slavery. It's an indulgent act, motivated by anger that Candy is winning more than a desire for justice.

Candy and his men are stupid horrible men. But they have a total monopoly on violence. They are backed up by ever institution. They can bend or break the rules as much as they want. King and Django cannot.

Inglorious Basterds gets brought up a lot as Tarantino's most relevant movie to current events. But I think Django is more prescient. Which is unfortunate considering it's about America in the leadup to the Civil War

Basically it has gradually been getting better as parents try to avoid their own parents' mistakes.
My parents weren't perfect but some of the things they told my about *their* parents is pretty awful. I hope to continue the trend!
