In the Strib politics newsletter, Angie Craig says “Don’t cave. Care about democracy more than decorum over in the Senate.” and that sounds nice, but that isn’t Angie Craig’s current MO. I’ve watched her votes, not her quotes, and I don’t think she is up to the task.
Rep. Angie Craig, a Democratic congresswoman representing a purple district in southern Minnesota and a candidate for U.S. Senate, appeared on the popular podcast "The Bulwark" on Wednesday, chatting with host Tim Miller about everything from Democrats in rural areas and a crunch on farm country, to why she showed up at a crypto summit this summer (hint: the committee she's ranking member on, U.S. House Agriculture, has jurisdiction over digital commodities). But, my colleague Christopher Vondracek reports, she also sent a message to the chamber she hopes to gain membership to, the U.S. Senate, in a standoff that could lead to a shutdown next week. "Don't cave. Care more about democracy more than decorum over in the Senate," she said. Shutdown showdown. It appears Craig is in lockstep on that issue with U.S. Sen. Tina Smith, who appeared alongside clergy at the Minnesota Capitol on Thursday to say she won't be intimidated by the GOP. Angie Craig missed the 1st day of the MN State Fair because she was the opening act for Eric Trump at a GOP Crypto-fest. When she made it to the fair she decided to court GOP voters that hate her by bringing cookies to their booth. Wild campaign choices from someone who wants to replace Tina Smith!

The big campaign event up there is the State Fair, and Craig missed the opening day, apparently to be in Jackson Hole hobnobbing with the crypto crowd. She was the only elected Democrat to speak, and she warmed up the crowd for Eric Trump, who spoke just after her. Tim Scott, the head of the GOP's Senate reelection efforts, made news there by thanking the industry for defeating populist Sherrod Brown in Ohio's 2024 election. (He may now be running again.) It is different for Hillary Clinton. The rules about what constitutes appropriate language are stricter for women than they are for men. While people 25 and under tend to expect that both genders should swear frequently, using words of similar offensiveness, people of older generations often still have the idea that swearing is not "ladylike." For example, in 2015, former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee expressed shock at how often people drop the f-bomb out East: "In New York, not only the men do it, but the women do it." Several books about Clinton use this societal attitude to vilify her, portraying her as a foul-mouthed harridan who spews curses at state troopers, secret service agents, military veterans and innocent staffers trying to fly the American flag. As a female candidate, Clinton already walks a minefield, trying to appear tough and responsible without looking like a word Huckabee would never say.

My first choice ranking for Mayor goes to whoever will commit to painting the concrete under/around the light rail tracks a bright yellow color so cars stop driving on the tracks. (Does the mayor have input on this? Probably not. Is this still my position? Yes. Do I live in Mpls? No, but if I did!!)

Really proud of our work in the Stonewall DFL caucus to screen all 5 mayoral candidates. Several were good, but Rev. Dr. Davis was phenomenal and was overwhelmingly supported by the political committee & the board. He will be an outstanding mayor for Minneapolis.

Today’s anger brought to you by 3 packets from United Healthcare saying that one of my kids “does not need” mental health testing, therefore they will not cover mental health testing. Of course, the child’s doc,therapist, & us want to perform testing so that we can appropriately treat them.

Blois Olson with a terrible take here: saying we should have a deadline to count votes and if we don’t tally them by the deadline, they just won’t be counted in final tally aka to calculate the winner. This is disenfranchisement, and foolish.
TAKE: Conspiracy theories are dangerous, and institutional trust is at an all-time low. That’s a scary combination that isn’t helped by the vote shifts and “irregularities” that we are seeing in Scott and Sherburne counties after results are reported and “all precincts are in”. They line-up with the two closest House races gives conservative conspiracy theorists fresh ammunition. It’s reasonable to ask serious questions about the issues, and perhaps a deeper audit of the process is in order. Perhaps the answer is that just as there is a deadline for ballots to be submitted, there needs to be a deadline for votes to be counted or they don’t’ qualify for the final total. Either way, if Minnesota is going to claim exceptionalism on voting and democracy, our election officials need fewer flubs going forward.
