I’m trying to calm down. Here are the books I bought the other day. My favorite thing is supporting independent bookstores.

The Country of the Pointed Firs by Sarah Orne Jewett

It’s nice to read a story about place and people instead of all of the current trash going on in the US.

LindaAnn LoSchiavo’s story “Sitting on the Santa Shift”

favorite line: “Because it’s better to give than be in the box, where heaps of correspondence wink, thinking “pick me."

Ten years ago today, Sandra Bland died. She was murdered in Texas. A cop turned his car around when he saw the out of state plates and a black woman driving. He tailed her. He stalked her. And, she ended up dead, in jail. She’d done nothing wrong. I wrote this poem for her.

Just read James Purdy’s short story “Cutting Edge.” I highly recommend seeking out his work. A tome including every single story was published in 2013. “Cutting Edge” can be found in the 1957 issue of Evergreen Review which is available as a facsimile.

Enjoyed reading John Howe’s short story “The Kite” in the current October Hill Magazine. That supper table could be wrought with anxiety that something you’d done that day might be revealed. Remember the feeling well.
