Interestingly, neither genetic diversity (heterozygosity, Ne) nor habitat changes explained current IUCN threat status. The work shows that genomic data offer valuable insights but are not always straightforward indicators of conservation risk.

We found repeated population expansions and contractions over the past 10 million years, with effective population sizes declining after the last interglacial period.

We built a new chromosome-level reference genome for the European pond turtle (Emys orbicularis), and analyzed genomic data from 21 turtle and tortoise species.

Alexander Archipelago wolves (Canis lupus ligoni) on Prince of Wales Island show high inbreeding, similar to endangered Isle Royale wolves. Genomic data reveals smaller population size & recent mating between relatives. These results can be used for conservation 🐺
