She's pretty sickly and I can't imagine any other option. But when I told my family, they called me a disgrace. Finbar wasn’t supposed to come, but Aunt Eithne had made us watch him while she harvested yellow flowers on the hillside. He slowed us down, and Niamh’s frustration roiled off her like steam against the cool breeze. Though the land was ripe with life, winter still dragged a claw through the air. As we ventured deeper into the forest, a feeling of unease grew within me. A sound rang in my ears, so faint I could not tell if it was imagined or real. Because for weeks, it had haunted my dreams.

I wonder if we are talking about different things when it comes to exposition vs implication. I highlighted a few opening passages from the priory of the orange tree to show what I mean. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but to me these instances of “telling” work very well.

Before I could reach my sister, Mary pulled me back, surprisingly strong. “Don’t, she’s fragile.” Twisting in my aunt’s grip, I saw the rise and fall of her chest, faint, but alive. My world was black, a flurry of inconsequential sounds like dust in the wind, lost in the night. All I saw was Niamh, and the tiny flicker of life, when once she’d been a firestorm. Her nightshirt was damp with sweat in the center, but the sleeves had been torn away, the edges bleeding. I saw the swellings in her armpits, small and purplish like quail eggs shoved beneath her skin. They were eating away at her, burning her up.

Excerpt from THE BANSHEE OF CLAN MURTAGH: Over the next few weeks it became clear to me that something had changed in the air. Perhaps it was the hunt that had torn into Deaglán’s carefully-held control. Or perhaps it was me who was changing, my attention evolving. I no longer cared so much about the minutia of the house, or felt the sting so hard when Mary served up backhanded compliments. Because at night, I had her. Deirdre. She was a mystery I was dying to unravel. Under cover of darkness, I went to the woods to find her on that same rock, always combing her hair, always making my breath catch in my throat. We’d settled into an uneasy ritual: the both of us acting afraid, at first. But then I would press my palm against her bare collarbone, her shoulder, her arm, and feel that strange tug, like something was being parted from me while Deirdre convulsed with memories.
