Good morning from #Canberra

Just one by-election going the right way and it’ll be 50-50!

And here’s my cake from the previous parliament (after the 2022 election) for comparison. The orange Smarties here are independents or other. /4

Women will hold 112 of the 226 seats. Just one more seat will tip us over into parity. So here is more cake data! 🎂📊 This is Australia’s 48th Parliament by gender, chamber and party. The left side is women, the right side is men. Pink icing for the Senate, green for the Reps. /2

After the May federal election, Australia’s federal parliament has almost reached gender parity. By my calculations the House of Representatives in the 48th Parliament will be 46% women and the Senate 56.6% women. The Parliament as a whole will be 49.6% women.

Some of the people who contact me about their experiences in parliamentary workplaces are suicidal. It took a(n “alleged”) rape at Parliament House to give us the Set the Standard report. I hope it will not take a preventable workplace death for real change to take place. /6

And personally, I will know Parliament’s workplace culture has improved when I no longer receive phone calls from parliamentary department and political staff there who are seeking help because their workplace has devastated their career and their mental health. /5

We will also know Parliament’s workplace culture has improved when people feel safe to speak out about their experiences, knowing they won’t face victimisation and retaliation. That is not currently the case. /4

We will know Parliament’s workplace culture has improved significantly when it is the perpetrators of workplace sexual assault, sexual harassment, bullying and discrimination who are forced out of their jobs. Not the victims of those behaviours. /3

Three years after the Jenkins report, there is still work to be done on improving parliament culture.

Excellent article by Maria Maley of ANU. As someone who has experienced the worst of that culture I know firsthand how much work remains to be done. /1

Since the release of the “Set the Standard” report in 2021, there has been a flurry of activity in response. But some of it may not be as effective as it could be.

Today in Weird Food Adventures - Sour Blueberry Twisties. The verdict: The worst of the weird Twisties flavours so far. Unappetising colour. Unappealing flavour combination. Not a fan.
