Yes, lots of grumbling but no organizing against it.
And some of the grumbling is fair, such as a lack of protection for trees and letting developers replace real vegetation with either concrete or plastic grass. That's fixable with better policy.

Knock down a 1960s/1970s single family on a reasonably large lot, replace with 2-4 townhomes.
There's a lot less resistance to this than building up.

I suspect that he did not in fact think random hugs from kids were the best part of being famous, but my parents were very embarrassed and he wanted to make them feel better about be running off.

As a preschooler, I saw him in public and ran and hugged him. My parents apologized for the way I just ran and grabbed him and he said something to the effect that random hugs from children was the best part of being famous.
