Perhaps next Christmas season you can read him Hogfather by Terry Prachett (I just read it for the first time this month). It carries a strong humanist message about how stories - like the story of a jolly gift-bringing man - are shaped and shape us in turn :)

I think it's good to pick endangered species over the most common ones, though. Like the pink lady's slipper for one!
