It's less about being completely neutral and more about being responsibly balanced and self-aware.

Personally, I lean toward neutral professionalism for everyday reporting, but I appreciate when journalists are transparent about their perspective in advocacy pieces. #UWJ201 #315

But advocacy journalism can be powerful too; it gives a voice to marginalized communities and brings attention to underreported issues.

That’s such a thoughtful takeaway from class! I think both approaches have value, depending on the context. Neutral professionalism is essential for informing the public and maintaining trust, especially with hard news.

what to cover, whom to talk to, how to tell a story—are informed by their experiences and perspectives. Nevertheless, a striving for fairness, accuracy, and transparency can reduce bias and build trust with readers.

Great question! I think that neutral professionalism is a wonderful ideal, but complete elimination of bias is perhaps a fantasy. Journalists are human, and their choices (1)

and how might this lead us to consider the effectiveness of media, advertising, or political communication differently?

I can say that it is present, but it is usually not the first thing to pop up. Misinformation still tends to have a negative influence, even if someone comments on the post. I usually find them lower in the comment feed, which makes their impact lower since fewer people see them. #UWJ201 #315

This is a great question. I believe a warning should be put on posts like this. In this way, they have every right to post, but it should be disclosed that the imagery is not real. #UWJ201 #315

In my experience, internet users don't always want to learn. They are making a statement that they agree with completely. The opinion they have is so strong that it cannot be changed by a comment on a post. I think this is partly because people don't view internet users as their peers but rather (1)

It would make sense that less access would make people interested in the little that they have. When people have more access, they can pick and choose, potentially allowing them to engage only with media they agree with. #UWJ201 #315

I have met so many friends using mass communication. Additionally, posting TikToks has become a great business for me. I think that mass communication has benefited me greatly. #UWJ201 #315

This is a very interesting observation. Elderly people do not seem to be thought about as much regarding these questions. I feel like social security or something that they all participate in could create a program to allow the elderly to keep learning. #UWJ201 #315

I believe it is better to cover the reasoning behind the issue. People typically only act violently if there is a reason behind it. So it is confusing why the news chooses to report on it like it is the minority. There is a reason for what people do 99% of the time. #UWJ201 #315

I believe that I often expect the world to be more dangerous than it is. I know when working in big cities, I often keep more alert of my surroundings due to things I've seen on TV. The only way to change this would be to be part of the situation. #UWJ201 #315

I think that the alarm method can be the most harmful. The difficulty of ensuring your details are correct when covering a recent topic is a huge issue with this method. Often, even if they correct themselves in the future, people continue to believe what is first said. #UWJ201 #315

Journalism can only do so much. They can either do their best to keep the world honest or not. It depends on the journalist. It is harder but I feel like covering both sides makes it a lot better. #UWJ201 #315
