disney had a real habit of making their villains fun and gay, which really didn't help as a young gay person. they were some of the only characters i had to identify with! and there's no *polite* drag queen coded plus-sized octopus women. of course i developed an affiliation for big mean ladies!

especially in these society that are seemingly deeply sexually repressed, it really backfired, making a point that the confidently seductive characters are the fat or misshapen ones. (i think often about how the only Star Wars character with any sort of active sex life appears to be Jabba the Hutt)

but then, i guess there was a generation before mine, who grew up with media insisting, say, "smoking is bad for you," who walked away with the message of "smoking is dangerous, and therefore cool," so this isn't, like, a unique phenomenon

which is wild, cos i absolutely understood through context clues that they're *supposed* to be "ugly" characters, but, like... then why are they hot. why are they the only characters wearing lingerie and being horny and getting nude shower scenes. you made me like this, matt groening. way to go
